Think Pink, Inc. was originally formed by Jen Henriksen, Crissie
McDowell, Melanie Adams and Katie Shamberg in Coeur d'Alene, ID in
October, 2004. While training for an upcoming half-marathon in Spokane,
the girls decided they didn't want to just run...they wanted to run for
a cause. In seeing that all four girls were linked to the
disease--through relatives or friends--breast cancer was a natural
choice. Melanie's mother was diagnosed with breast cancer in January,
2004 and Katie had lost two close relatives to the disease the same
year. The girls decided to take it a step further and designed the first
Think Pink T-shirt to be worn during the race. The front sported a
pretty bra draped over the words "Support the ones you love. This shirt
is helping find a cure." It was an instant hit at the race.
Word spread and people started requesting to buy the shirts. Soon the
group had raised their first $5,000. With surprise success of the first
T-shirt sales, the idea evolved to become Think Pink, Inc.--a non-profit
organization that raises money through T-shirt sales and local events to
benefit breast cancer research and education. 100% of the net proceeds
are donated to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. To date, Think Pink, Inc.
has raised over $50,400!
In August of 2008, Lindzee Frei, Kate Holgate, Michelle Caster, Katie Shamberg and
Crissie McDowell formed the Boise chapter of Think Pink, Inc. Like the
group in Coeur d'Alene, all five women had very personal experiences
having dealt with friends or family affected by cancer. Kate's was very
recent...after a tough two-year battle with holangiocarcinoma, a rare
cancer of the bile duct, she lost her mom on July 3, 2008. Kate had
always been amazed by the love and support that her friends, family and
the community-at-large provided during her own family's struggle. As a
result, she felt the need to "give back" in a way that would help other
families dealing with a loved one battling cancer. This strong desire to
help others drew the girls together. Crissie's work with Think Pink
while living in Coeur d'Alene inspired them to act upon fundraising
opportunities here in Boise. And so the Boise chapter of Think Pink,
Inc. was born.
As the Boise chapter of Think Pink, Inc., our goal is to educate the
local community about breast cancer and aid in the fight to find a cure
in our lifetime. Through various fundraising activities, we commit 100%
of proceeds to be directly donated to the Boise affiliate of Susan G.
Komen for the Cure. The funds donated are used to provide mammograms--an
essential tool in detecting breast cancer early--to uninsured women, as
well as aid in funding research grants for breast cancer.
Our slogan is "You know someone or know someone who knows someone."
